KB958687 update installation Keeps failing on a client's computer. Service Pack 1 is not installed. In Event Viewer, I get a "not applicable" error.

When I get a chance, I am going to install Service Pack 1 on his computer, and see if it will install after that.

The reason I am posting this is to try and help out with anyone who has previously had this error come up.

I admit, I should have looked to see if the service pack was up to date before trying to install an update, but now I know. And knowing is half the battle!

So if anyone else has had this issue, and noticed that installing Service Pack 1 had fixed the issue, please post here so we can potentially help out others with a similar problem

Hi
I run XP Pro, never had any real issues. Auto updates tried and failed to
install January Security Update KB958687. PC then froze - had to finally use
Recovery Console to get the PC back!!! PC keeps trying and failing to
install update so I have switched Auto Updates off as I don't want to lose
the machine again.
Any suggestions would be appreciated
