Freeze during update installation

My computer started installing some microsoft updates this morning. and for about 2.5 hrs now, it has been stuck on the screen that says "do not unplug or power down your computer. Instaling updates 2 of 2" or something to that effect.

Any suggestions? What would happen if i just shut down the computer?

any ideas/ help would be GREATLY appreciated!

UPDATE: now 2 hrs after my original quote and STILL HUNG. I can access the computer through the network. but it can't still be installing hte updates, can it?
