User Profile probs & lost files & folders

Hello all,

Today my laptop had a meltdown. My user profile would not load and it loaded a temporary profile for me instead. I tried rebooting to see if it would load mine but the same happened again. I proceeded to complete a system restore to a point I knew the system was in good working order.
Thankfully my profile was restored but over 50% of my files and folders were not present. The funny thing is when I click on the Start button and type one of the file or folder names into the search bar I can actually see them in the start menu window. When I click on them though I get an error message:
C:\Users\myprofile\Desktop\etc\etc\etc refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might bave been moved to a different location.
I do take responsibility for not backing up my files but I have learnt from my mistake. I do have some very important files that I need to retrieve if possible. If anyone can give me any advice I would be very appreciated.
