Wish I could help.
Unfortunately I have a similar problem. Each external data storage device, that works on any other pc running no Windows Vista, needs to be formated by Windows Vista. This is something I don't want. Nevertheless, when I start formatting, Windows Vista always tells me it is not able to format the device...
When I find a solution, I will let you know..

I installed the os on one hdd and was having problems, so i disconnected the drive and installed the os on the other hdd and everything worked fine. i then hooked up the hdd that i disconnected and under disk management i tried to format the drive .
drive C: hdd has the OS that is working fine
drive E: hdd is the drive i want to format and remove the os but windows will not allow me to , since it has system files on it, is there anyway that i could format this drive?
