Event log service - access denied

I am having trouble with random blue screens and I suspect they are caused by a software application. I tried to check the event log to see what was happening at the time of the crash but found that there was no event log. Task manager tells me that the service is stopped but when I try to start it, I get an "Access Denied" message. I have normal administrative privileges.

A similar query was posted on Vistaheads on 08-03-2007 by Carlos Alberto but received no replies. Hoping I may have more luck!
