Thanks for the contact. I've been off-line for a few days with a very hectic workload.
I logged on last night and downloaded Vista SP1. I still have the same error message when trying to download the MS up-date file however the SP seens to have cured some of Vista's other anoyances. The restart function now works so the restart (boot) does not hangup when new installs automatically restart to complete the installation.
I've not done any other checking for signs of improvement however the login seems slower than pre sp1 install.
The system and file backup process in vista has never been successful and I will keep you posted on whether the sp has fixed this problem.
