TO FIX YOUR MISSING DISK MANAGEMENT, READ ON!
Ist POST, TNX Steve and Paul for the OP...
I am using Vista Ultimate v.6.0.600 @ 4.2Ghb and lost the Computer Management/Disk Management/
Virtual Disk Service (VDS) and received errors that a remote PC or Firewall was not enabled or blocked the service (in the Vista mode first).. I needed the VDS to change drive letters, simple problem Hu? (with tons of data on disks I couldnt access, you betcha!) An OCTA O/S BOOT SYSTEM...Quite a complex system.
MS only had hit & miss fixes, patches, bloggs and "disclamers if you use it" which didn't address the real problem anyway. I pulled out my old Win 3.0 floppys and earlier references and finally determined that the disabled VDS problem was fixable and didn't require an O/S clean install (thank God!). Files and file options often change in the strange world of digital files and this is just what happened to provide
no VDS or a looksee at my hard drives (12 x 1Tb drives with tricks and 6 R/W drives) when needed. The digital fairy strikes again!
THE FIX: (For XP, Vista and Win 7- 32 and 64 bit systems)
Click
START,
Control Panel,
Administration Tools and then
Services. Scroll to
"VIRTUAL DISK", right click to select
PROPERTIES. Under the
GENERAL TAB, Under
START TYPE, select either
AUTOMATIC (delayed start),
AUTOMATIC,
MANUAL or
DISABLED. Chances are it is
disabled if you are reading this entry. Select either
AUTOMATIC or MANUAL and then click
APPLY. If you select AUTOMATIC, you will need to click the
start button under SERVICE STATUS, then ok, MANUAL does not require the start sequence
and it will only function when you need it.
This will provide the recovery of your missing Disk Management (VDS) and the error message seen...
Have fun with your Disk Management...and your now working Virtual Disk System.
