Microphone Problem

I have a Dell Inspiron 1721 Laptop. Have just had to reload Windows Vista Home Premium and now get nothing from the inbuilt Microphone, or an external one I have attached. Speakers work ok. Have tried all the usual things in the sound option of control panel and via the sound icon bottom right. Have also updated windows so its up to date as per today 31/3. Any suggestions would be most appreciated as I use skype to talk to family in France, much cheaper than using the phone.
