PLEASE HELP! Can't get Windows updates

I'm ready to start pulling my hair out! My Vista Home OS keeps giving me a system level error code 0x80096001. I've been unable to find a solution. You're the experts...please help fix this. NOTE: Mr. Fix-It doesn't.
