Windows Photo gallery

I installed the disc that came with the new Nikon 3100 camera I bought and all was ok for a few photo transfers. Now when I transfer photos from the camers all goes to plan and when the transfer is complete I get a screen message saying "windows Photo Gallery has stopped working" and the photos disappear. Open the folder again and after a few seconds the same story, what gives? The photos are automatically deleted from the camera, that I can fix.

I have this exact issue. I have a Dell too (XPS 600) which I upgrade with a
new install from Windows XP to Vista. I called dell and they refuse to help
because I upgraded and they will only support Windows XP on this machine.
