Windows Media Player 11 won't stream live video

I have Windows Vista home basic. The issue I am having with Windows Media Player 11 is that whenever I click on the play button, the "connecting to media" message appears above the play button then it quickly goes back to "ready". I clicked the play button numerous times yet it will not stream online content. I fixed the registry and even performed a system restore, yet I still cannot stream using WMP11. Streaming online videos with a flash player works just fine, it's only the WMP11 I am having the most trouble with.
Is there a way to resolve this issue without having to uninstall and reinstall the entire Vista Operating System?

First, make sure that WMP is your default player. Then do this. Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Your Default Programs. Also, Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Program Access and Computer defaults. Be sure to choose WMP and the type of browser you are using as your default player and browser respectively. Hope it will works fine.
