Laptop Connection Trouble

Hi, have got a PC running Vista HP 32 bit - Canon printer connected by USB, Netgear router, have now got a laptop running windows 7 64 bit and have been trying to connect it to the printer via the router. I have read several posts on the web but do not seam to be able to get the laptop to find the printer when searching. I have changed properties of printer to Share and also changed the printer to share in the network properties. Any suggestions as to where I am going wrong - or full instructions would be most helpful.
And yes I have got the PC up and running when trying to make the search/connection

It may be due to properties of printer for sharing purposes. Try to install the printer locally. Run a command prompt and type the following: net use LPT2: \\servername\printer . It usually works fine.
