Side-by-side configuration error - MS Messenger

Everythihng was fine until I decided to load MS Messenger Live 2011. Now I get an error messager upon attempting to launch MS Messenger, complaining that there is a "side-by-side configuration error".

So I uninstalled everything that was entitled Windows Live something and tried reinstalling MS Messenger 2011 to no avail.

I have noticed that the MS attempt to auto-update Windows Live Essentials had failed (error code 800706BE) a month ago, and has not been reattempted (how do you force a previously failed attempt at an update, anyhow).

All of the above Windows Live discussion may be a red-herring.

All I want to do is get MS Messenger up and running... any suggestions?
