Error code 80200053

On downloading the latest Microsoft updates I got error code 80200053 for the update on Media Center for Windows Vista.
Retried to update, but with the same result.
Can anybody tell me what this means and what I sould do?

Hi Paula,

I had the same problem. According to the error message, files that were in use couldn't be updated. So I went in to Task Manager to end two Media Center processes that normally run all the time (ehmsas.exe and ehtray.exe), then retried the update, and it worked.

Yesterday I encountered the same error. I could download the Microsoft.NET updates, but the Cumulative Update for Media Center wouldn't install. I tried robert e's solution, but it didn't work.

I found the answer here: I get this error after latest update WindowsUpdate_80200053

Here's what worked for me:

1) Click "Start" > "Run" > type "services.msc" > press "Enter Button"

(if you do not have "Run", enable it in the Start Menu Options by right-clicking the Task Bar > Properties)

2) Scroll down to "Windows Installer" and Start the Service

3) Now try updating

Hi Bob,

Your solution was too complicated for me; I could not find the location where to stop the processes you mention. However, Via Microsoft.nl I found a link with help of which I think I have solved the problem, since download and installation were declared successful:
