Realtek HD audio sound card

I tried to connect a subwoofer by changing to 5.1 from 2.1 but I lost sound completely. When I checked my system it said it was a realtek audio device. Then I downloaded updated drivers. Now I have sound only in 2.1 mode and also my system says it is a microsoft device when before it said it was a realtek.
What is happening? And how can I get my subwoofer to work? Please help.
