volume mixer comes up 'no audio output device is installed'

i just got a new computer for christmas, which has windows vista on it, but when i looked at the volume mixer it has a red circle with a white cross in it, and the words 'no audio output device is installed' whern i hover over it. i have looked all over my computer for something that could be wrong and checked all the plugs at the back a million times. please help!

Hi,

First of all, are your speakers connected via USB or via a 3.5" audio jack (lime green for stereo speakers)?
If they are USB speakers you may have to install a specific driver that should have come on a CD with the speakers. The built in audio should really be working on a brand new PC unless you have faulty hardware.

Go to Start - Control Panel - Classic View - Device Manager.
Can you see any yellow exclamation marks here? Look under USB controllers and under sound video and game controllers.
