Internet Explorer Keeps Crashing

Ok, before we start, I have read, re-read, re-interpreted and tried just about every fix that I can find on the internet so it is in total exasperation that I throw myself on your mercy and hope that together we can find a fix for my problem.

I have a new computer. It has an AMD Phenom 9550 Quad Core 2.2 ghz processor with 4gb Ram.

My problem is that Internet Explorer keeps falling over and ultimately causes the machine to lock up.

When I check the Task Manger, even though I've just opened IE, it always opens two Instances in Task manager. Other instances open as I open other pages but always two when I first start it up.

The memory usage gets higher and higher and eventually stops responding.

I thought I'd also give Firefox a go. This seems to be better but still falls over eventually.

I have tried switching off add-ons, tried resetting IE, changed registry settings, and ran so many spyware programmes that I'm pretty sure I'm clear of any nasties. There's probably other things I've forgotten about as well but please, can anybody help me?
