Nvidia driver upgrade

Vista did an auto update . Now my video card will not work. On boot up $ appear at bottom of screen & then as the boot proceeds the screen flickers but nothing discernable. I can only get the computer to work by using the VISTA DISC & using the generic vga driver Card is an nvidia8600gt even reverting to installing the drivers using the original nvidia disc does not help.
