How to change audio/sound/mike settings?

I'm a writer who uses Dragon NaturallySpeaking voice recognition software, and have just installed Version 10. Now I need to check my VAIO laptop's sound settings. With Windows XP there was a neat way to make changes via the Control Panel to the recording, microphone etc settings, but in Vista these seem to be markedly different. I used to have a collection of useful web printouts that gave me step-by-step instructions for how to do this, but they don't work with Vista Business.

Can anyone tell me how to do this? I'm very low tech.

Under the 'control panel' there is a 'sound' icon. click it and you should be able to do everything from there???? or is this what you tried already? otherwise, find the sound adapter in device manager that your system is utilizing (if you don't already know) and then look for that manager type tool under the control panel. But I would look at the 'sound' pick first described above and go from there. good luck
