Windows Update Error Code: 80080005

hello vistaheads!
this my first time posting.
my problem is that i am no longer able to get windows update. see error code above. I have a Dell XPS 410 and using Vista Home Premium (32 bit). i first noticed this several days ago.
i have tried disabling antispyware/antiviral programs and did some registry "cleaning", all to no avail. today, i called MS and they referred me to Dell. their response was quick: backup and re-install. interestingly they seem to be pointing the finger at each other as to the cause. nobody seems to want to take responsibility and provide "real" support. so, here i am.
any thoughts anyone?

Hello! I see no expert replies to your problem! Have you solved it? I searched the web but could not see any conclusive solution, although the same problem is faced by many. Please give a feed back.

I have not received any replies. I still have the same problem.
It amazes me that Microsoft has not found a fix for this problem.
What's worse is that there is not even an acknowledgment of the problem!

Hello! Since there is no expert reply and since you are still stuck with the same problem, may I suggest something? I am no computer expert, but what I suggest is basic and harmless and probably you would have already tried it!

In the IE browser, disable all add-ons and set the security to default. Then Start->Run -> msconfig.exe and from the 'services' disable all NON-Microsoft applications. Restart. Pray to god and start windows update from IE browser/Start menu.

Best of luck! Please get back with the outcome. (I was worried the first time when I did not see even your response for quite some time!)

your suggestion did not work.
i hope that someone out there is reading this thread and provide some solutions. Microsoft surely isn't. i've never known a company to be so unresponsive to such a difficult issue that is obviously affected a lot of MS-Vista users. incredible.
