Software package installs stuck

I've got a new Lenovo with Vista Business. I initially had trouble with a Canon 7600 printer install disk. The progress bar got just part of the way over, then just froze (over three hours). Same thing happened to me when installing Kaspersky Labs Internet Security 2009. If it's related, my automated backup has been failing to create a shadow image. Can someone recommend a place to look to resolve the issue ? After I kill the installs, I can't even shutdown normally.

Anyone know how I can troubleshoot the issue ?
