Windows Live Photo Gallery

I am trying to import photos from a digital camera. When either using a Media Card or the camera direct the Windows Live Photo Gallery informs me that I need to "set associations" and I don't know how to do this. I am a newbie with Vista Home Premium on a Lenovo computer and need layman language to lead me through the steps to do this - can anyone please help?
