Installation and update failures

Hello All,
I'm running vista ultimate. Recently I've had problems installing most software.Firefox loads and runs fine ,blackberry desktop and opera 9.5 update do not. Epson printer driver loaded but scanner driver will not.
Updates are hit and miss. Service Pack 1 Will not install.

Tried disabling everything I could.Started as admin.Ran full diagnostic. No error codes. Just fails to install.
