Plug and Play Disaster

Whenever I try to connect any plug and play device to my new PC (the latest being a webcam), the PC says it will find the driver automatically and then hangs, requiring me to manually turn OFF and then ON again the power. There is no option for searching for the correct driver myself, nor is there any way to tell the PC that a driver should not be necessary. (The new webcam's manual says that unlike XP, with Vista I should be able just to plug in the cam and start using it.)
I can't connect my Walkman, nor my digital camera, for the same reasons. Can anyone help?

You're not the only one with plug and play problems under vista, since a few day's none of my USB-stick's nor my usb External Hard Disk work anymore. even my webcam and my scanner/printer are out of order.
this is all since an windows updated a few day's ago I asked a friend who knows very much about PC's and stuff, and he has the same problem.
