Installing Microsoft programs under Vista

I've installed several pieces of non-Microsoft software without any problems on my Vista Business and Vista Home Premium machines. But the only software that gives me problems is Microsoft software. I had problems installing Zune on the Home Premium machine and now I can't install Mobile 6 Standard on either machine to sync to my IPAQ. I've deactivated my virus software and Windows defender, along with the User Account Control but it hasn't helped. The software always gets to 99% installed and then stops and tells me the installation has failed. Anyone have any ideas on how to deal with this effectively?
