Vssadmin list shadows

Does anyone know what the output means when I execute the command "vssadmin list shadows"?

I know generally what it is - it is a list of the shadow volumes within my system. However, I want to know precisely what "originating machine" and "service machine" refer to. When are these values different? They are always the same for me.
