AVG has failed to start

I just upgraded to Vista and now AVG doesn't work.
The first problem was that the security update for micrsoft.net framework version 1.1 service pack 1 would not update. Eventualy I reinstalled version 1.1 and service pack 1 and that is fine.

Now with avg I get the message "application has failed to start becuase its side by side configuration is incorrect." I have been to avg forums and done all their suggestions:
uninstalled and reinstalled avg as administrator
uninstalled and reinstalled avg with UAC disabled as well as window defender and firewall disabled
downloaded and installed vcredist_x86.exe for 05 and 08

and still everytime I start avg I get the same message. HELP!

The AVG works properly in Windows XP and 98 but idon't know why it's not working properly in vista.
