Hi there, I am new here but read your post and feel your pain! Had the same problem with 2 webcams. One Labtec, one Trust. The first thing I have to ask is what make and model is your webcam? I cannot advise if I do not know this information. However I can tell you the two problems I faced and maybe that will help you. The Labtec webcam I had came with a cd to install it. I did everything correct except when it said download latest software from web I mad the fatal error of saying yes! Once it was all installed it didn't work. I then tried un-installing it and then re-installing it from the cd. This did work! So there must have been a problem with the web download. Heres the one:

Other tips include: checking usb post (maybe not enough power - use usb at back of pc if pos) also check the webcam doesn't have an actual fault, check light comes on etc and that it is all screwed together correctly. I know with the Trust one it all unscrewed into bits so tightening was important. See you around!!
