some updates could not be installed KB979909
Windows XP Pro - Fully Updated to 12 June-10. I have automatic updates
switched on but today after downloading and installing one of the updates
could not be installed. (see reported error) I searched for a solution and
tried one I found on this website which suggested registering the Wups2.dll
file.

I did this and the process appeared to work OK. But on rebooting the
machine I still get the same Cannot install updates error:-

Some updates could not be installed

The following updates were not installed:

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Security Update
for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP x86 (KB979909)

I would appreciate some help to resolve this issue. Thanks

RE: some updates could not be installed KB979909

I had the same issue, but with NET framework 1.1 not being able to install -
tried all sorts, even a 90 minute session with MS expert (ugh).

I decided if it was an issue with 1.1 (or 3.5 etc) I would try re-installing
it without uninstalling as some people have suggested.

So, it worked. I went to microsoft.com, then to DOWNLOADS, then on the right
hand side it says frequent destinations or something, DOWNLOAD CENTER. In the
download center box I typed NET framework 1.1 and reinstalled it and the 1.1
service pack too. So, you could try this - type in the versions of .NET
framework it says didn't work, click download for each, and also check for SP
(service pack) updates too. After that was done (and I did get one error
message that something was shutting down during this too), I clicked on that
darned yellow shield again and it installed fine and restarted fine too. Not
sure if this will help you or anyone else, but I hope so!

RE: some updates could not be installed KB979909
Thanks,

I might have to give it a try but since the problem is with the latest
updates and a lot of people are reporting it (a web search brings up a lot of
people with the same problem) I expect Microsoft will have to do something
about it officially. At least that's what I'm hoping for! ;-)

Thanks again

Feels great to have fixed this issue that bugged me for almost 3 days

I tird all the re-install / repair techniques but the update kept on coming back. So

- I enabled verberos logging as per How to Enable Microsoft Installer logging and Verbose logging to gather additional troubleshooting Information
- Download the patch and extracted it to c:\something
- Ran the installer and checked the log file under C:\Documents and Settings\ {UserName} \Local Settings\Temp\klMicrosoft .NET Framework 2.0-KB979909_20120112_215250732-Msi0.txt
- Found that the installer was failing because it was looking for a folder c:\5e32d93a8b7950009859f6477b4ff9\NDP20SP2-KB979909.msp

Bingo ......

Copied the previously extracted folder in step 2 and renamned it to c:\5e32d93a8b7950009859f6477b4ff9

ran the update (installer) again and t installed all good
