Can't install updates Error8000FFF and E0408
These updates continuously fail:
KB977863,KB980302,KB071033,KB976264,KB976662,KB979 306 for Win7 Ultimate. And
I can't start Event Log. Error code 5 Acess Denied. I've run scans with
windows Defender, Malwarebytes,Spybot S&D,AVG,and Avast in safe
mode,Windows, and or pre-boot and they all come up clean. When I ran Checkdisk
I noticed it made corrections to a large number of Security Descriptors. Does
this sound likea virus or an update problem? I was able to install defender
and compatablity view updates. I really don't want to do another clean
install.

CHKDSK gave you errors/fixed things?
Could be bad RAM or hard disk drive. Test both of those hardware
components.

Re: Can't install updates Error8000FFF and E0408
What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?
Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Re: Can't install updates Error8000FFF and E0408
This was a clean install of Win7 Ultimate. No Norton or McAfee ever
installed. Have Malwarebytes/realtime protection and Spybot S&D installed.
The KB971033 installed this morning but I still can't start Event. I have
tried to reset security permissions in the drive properties several times.
There are two files pagefile.sys and hibrfil.sys with in use by another
program errors and about another dozen system volume files with acess denied
errors. I don't know if this is normal or not.

Neither of those applications is an anti-virus application.
And if you;ve not purchased MBAM, it provides no realtime protection.

It is not normal and suggests that you're seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection.
