can't find updates, error 80070490
I have windows vista 32 bit and can't search for new updates,
it keeps showing an error code.
I have already searched alot of solutions on this site with no luck.
The history of previous installed updates is gone, and it stated that the
last update was installed in april 2009.

I already tried renaming softwaredistribution but that changed nothing,
also installed KB967723 but said it isn't for my system.
System update readyness KB947821 didn't change anything either.
Tried sfc/scannow but said there was nothing wrong

don't have an windows dvd anymore to upgrade or re-install

this is really annoying, because my pc is slowing down alot.
Internet pages keep freezing and restarting and such and i think it's
because my updates aren't installed.

Any help?

I recommend downloading and installing
MalwareBytes' Antimalware (MBAM) and
SUPERAntiSpywaяe (SAS).

Do a full scan with MalwaяeBytes' and
SUPERAntiSpywaяe.

<http://www.superantispyware.com/>

Reboot
-=-

<http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php>

Reboot
-=-

Both free versions of MBAM and SAS are on-demand scanners and offer no
'real-time' protection. Keep them installed and use them as
'second-opinion' scanner which is purposely (by design) recommended by
their respective authoяs.

The slowdown is probably something else, but for the 80070490 errors, open
the CBS.log in c:\windows\logs\cbs\
Look for "Failed to resolve Package" errors.
I you have some, note down the KB number to see if they are all the same.

Backup the registry key:
HKLM\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Com ponent Based Servicing
Then search in that location for any keys with the KB number that is
showing up as Failed to Resolve and delete those references.

restart the automatic update service, and then try searching for updates
again.

*Right* click on the Component Based Servicing folder and choose Export.
Name the file CBS (.reg will be added to it by Vista), click the
Desktop icon in the left frame, then click the Save button.
It will be saved to *your* Desktop so you can find it if needed.

Also, please be aware that improper editing of the registry can result
in the system being unable to boot up.
*Only delete the entries* that refer to the specific KB that's lacking
content in the registry.

Please see this:
How to overcome error 0x80070490 when installing updates in Windows
Vista/Server 2008
http://blogs.msdn.com/andrekl/archiv...rver-2008.aspx

You probably do NOT need to use the instructions for reset permissions,
so stop at " Once done, I could install the package just fine. "

IF malware is in play here, then you may have to reset perms and
reinstall the Windows Update Agent.

What is the installed antivirus/security suite, is it's subscription
current, and when was the last time the system was scanned for the
presence of malware ?

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2)
when posting in a forum or newsgroup. Please do so in your next reply.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Re: can't find updates, error 80070490
Hi, i can't seem to be able to export this folder.
I do not know much about computers and such so mayne i'm overlooking it
I'm in computer/C/Windows/logs
and there i see the CBS folder.
When i rightclick there doesn't seem to be an 'export' option
I can open, scan, add to archive (winrar), copy, cut , delete..
How can i export the file? I'm looking in the right folder.

I have antiMalware and Norton.
Both recently installed and free
Last time it was scanned was 2 days ago.

Re: can't find updates, error 80070490
I'm sorry, don't know much about computers, i have vista 32bit.
don't know sp?:s
I have Norton Anti-virus, recently installed and did a full scan
I have SuperAntiSPyware and Malwarebytes' anti-malware
The norton is a free trail version and i had installed McAfee but don't have
it anymore.

I also did a full scan with Norton and with anti-malware and
superantispyware, my internet pages didn't freeze.. for a while. eg: when i
have 2 internetpages open and close 1 of them, my pc needs alot of work to
close it, resulting in a frozen screen sometimes.
So i think i have something that keeps returning. Maybe a program that is
installed?
But Norton etc. keeps overlooking this problem.

Thank you for helping btw

Eddie was trying to point out that properly editing the registry will
resolve the updating error.

Please, *do NOT even attempt to do so* if you can not differentiate
between what you're seeing in Windows Explorer as opposed to what you
would be seeing if you opened the Registry Editor.
