Automatic Updates won't start
Using servise, Automatic Updates won't start when I try to manually start it.
I get the message (Error 1058: The service cannot be started, Either because
it is Disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.)
What can I do to fix this.

RE: Automatic Updates won't start

You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or the
"0x80246008" code when you try to download updates from the Microsoft Windows
Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site
<http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=910337>

First - ensure you do not have "Vundo".

It seems possible that your Windows installation has been deliberately
damaged by a trojan (Vundo, along any uninvited guests. (SDBot and ZLOB, all
protected by a rootkit.)) so as to prevent you updating your system or
removing the trojan.

Your first priority must be to cleanse your PC of all malware.

A very good antimalware app is SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes
Anti-Malware.

There is a free version (on demand scanning only)
<http://www.superantispyware.com/>

Reboot

Try running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware... download, update, and perform a
full system scan:

Re: Automatic Updates won't start
In most cases, this is a clear indication that malware is trying to
prevent the system from being able to update so as to keep the system
vulnerable.

* What is the installed anti virus, when was the system last scanned,
and is the subscription current ? *

Using Internet Explorer, you can attempt on online scan with either the
OneCare Protection scan:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

If the system is not that badly infected running the above scan should
restore the AU service.

or, the ESET online scanner:
http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

If online scans can not be accomplished because resident malware is
blocking access to those scanners, suggest you download, save and then
install Malwarebytes anti-malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Click the "Download free version" button.

RE: Automatic Updates won't start
had update problem and errors 1058, plus 0x8ddd0018, 0x80070570, 0x80070020,
0x80070422.
downloaded a free antivirus program from avira.com which removed numerous
trojan viruses which my regular security suite could not handle.
my windows and IE8 quickly updated me with 20 updates backed up in 1
months time.
my problems coinsided with my download of IE8 and my regular security
suite struggled to cope.
the ms download support team never mentioned malware/viruses cleanup to
solve the problem.
esp. thanks to your 2 earlier responders for their comments.
