unable to search for updates

For some reason, I'm suddenly getting the following message:
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. Take the following steps to try solving the problem:
Refresh the page.
In Internet Explorer, delete your Temporary Internet Files by going to the
Tools menu and clicking Internet Options.
Close and then re-open Internet Explorer.

I've tried all those steps without any success. Nothing else has changed
about my computer, no new programs or updates.

Have you tried to reboot the system just in case some rogue program is in the
memory?

Sometimes restarting the computer solves the problem without doing anything
drastic like reformatting, or scanning the systems for viruses etc.

Thanks, but yes, I've already tried both rebooting and virus/malware scans.

Is that the only link you are unable to access ?
Can you access the Internet Explorer at all ?

Yes, otherwise IE works fine, and I can go to all over web sites without
problems.

How did you search for updates ?
Via Control Panel > Windows Updates ?

I went to the usual site for Microsoft Updates from my favorites list:

And I've tried clicking on both Express and Custom.

When I click on the link you provided, I got this :

Microsoft Update could not be installed on your computer
Make sure that you log on as an administrator or as a member of the

Start button --> RUN
(no "RUN"? Press the "Windows Key" + R on your keyboard)
--> type in:
winver
--> Click OK.

The picture at the top of the window that opens will give you the general
(Operating System name and flavor) while the line starting with the word
"version" will give you the rest of the story.

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

Download and run the MSRT manually:

Reboot.
