Right-click on My Computer & select Properties: What WinXP version is
displayed on the resulting General tab?
Were you installing the updates via Automatic Updates or via Windows Update
website?
Are you unable to reach
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com now?
Is MS Office (2007?) installed?
You probably should have been more patient (i.e., it probably wasn't
"stuck") and you should have been running on AC power.
That being said, it's very unusual for a brand-new WinXP computer to need 43
updates right off the bat (unless Office 2007 w/out any Service Packs came
preinstalled on it). Are you sure it isn't a used but brand-new-for-you
computer?
Is the computer still under Warranty or Service Contract?
What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?
