Updates screwing up my work

I have vista that updates every 3 days and keep the HD busy most of the time.
During work or play the computer will restart to "install updates". For the
love of God there is nothing so f.... anoying as being in the middle of
something and having everything shut down because f... Vista decided that
it's time for a restart now!. How to stop this sh..t. Please help!

Turn off automatic updates

So - turn off Automatic updates and fix/properly maintain your own computer.

any updates until you're ready and willing to reboot, should the need arise.
