They're stored in WINDOWS\Software Distribution\Download
To remove them:
Vista ( commands can be run from Run on the Start Menu. If Run is not
listed, click the Start orb; type run into the Start Search field; under
Programs, click Run)
1. Stop the Windows Update service [net stop wuauserv - then click OK or
press Enter]
If BITS is running [Background Intelligent Transfer Service], stop
that too [net stop bits]
2. Navigate to WINDOWS\Software Distribution\Download
Delete the contents of the Download subfolder
3. Start the Windows Update service [net start wuauserv]
As long as BITS is set to Manual, there's no need to restart it
OR, just restart the system
The detected updates should now be redownloaded when the Windows Update
applet is opened and one clicks " Check for updates " or, when the
system is restarted
XP ( if Run is not listed on the Start Menu, right click My Computer
either on the Desktop or Start Menu; choose Manage. Click the plus sign
next to Services and Applications. Click on Services.
Stop the Automatic Updates service. IF BITS is running, stop that, too )
1. Click Start > Run > type in the below and press Enter or click OK
after entering the command
2. Stop the Automatic Updates service [net stop wuauserv]
If running, stop BITS [Background Intelligent Transfer Service], too
net stop bits
3. Navigate to WINDOWS\Software Distribution\Download
Delete the contents of the Download subfolder
4. Restart the Automatic Updates service [net start wuauserv]
As long as BITS is set to Manual, there's no need to restart it
OR, just restart the system.
