Automatic updates reported failed

Running Windows XP Home SP3
Every update from Windows Update downloads, then the procedure ends
reporting that it has failed to install.
Sometimes if I then check the history, the same update shows as installed.
Other times, it doesn't show in the history, but if I restart the procedure,
it shows as already downloaded, and then it installs when I start the
installation without downloading again.
I'm not sure when this started to happen, but it was some time ago, and I
have been living with it. Possibly when SP3 was installed back in 2008?

And the update that always fails to install would be...?
