Genuine Advantage update fails on WinXP, no error code

WGA fails to install on my WindowsXP PC without any error messages.

I recently noticed updates were installing every time I shut down my
WindowsXP PC. Eventually I went onto Update and manually saw the updates.
Listed were IE8, a .net service pack, and WGA at 0 MBs in size. I selected
all three and updated. IE8 and .net were installed, but I'm told WGA fails to
install with no error code. The updates icon is perpetually in the taskbar.
Clicking it to install manually shows a patch of 1.5 MB in size, KB905474.
WGAsetup is unpacked and intialized, but I'm told installation has failed. At
shutdown I'm told important updates are being installed, but it never works.

WGA has been present and running on my PC since it was introduced. This
problem occurred without any changes to the system, so I guess it was an
update. How do I solve this issue? Thanks.

I've managed to resolve the issue. Downloading and running the standalone
installer worked.
