Error 800700003 when installing Microsoft updates

I keep getting this message when trying to install updates on my vista
system. I have searched online for hints about what it might be that is
blocking my ability to fix it and have tried all sorts of different supposed
fixes, but nothing seems to take care of my problem (most of the fixes seem
to apply to XP operating systems though but I tried them anyway). Can anyone
help me so I can get my system up and updating things besides windows once
again???

If you receive Windows Update error 80070003 while checking for updates, you
need to remove the temporary files that Windows uses to identify updates for
your computer. To remove the temporary files, stop the Windows Update
service, delete the temporary update files, restart the Windows Update
service, and then try to check for Windows updates again.
