having a terrible time with Automatic Updates and

I seem to be having a hard time with Automatic Updates and also with Windows
Update website. Automatic Updates found some updates which I allowed to
install about 4 days ago - they don't seem to have installed though as it was
always telling me to click here to install updates. When I shutdown the
computer (which is new - about 3 weeks) it stays on the Windows is saving
your settings screen. So I have turned off AU and went to the website to see
if I can get the updates to install. It isn't showing any updates BUT there
is an install screen which comes up but doesn't seem to do anything. I am
running Windows XP SP3.

Any suggestions as how to get this to work correctly? I looked in the
WindowsUpdate log and keep seeing "PerUpdate" regulated and can NOT download.
Anyone have a clue?
