Windows update doesn't start

When I choose Windows update (or Microsoft update), there is some brief
activity (hourglass icon) and then nothing happens. The list of tasks
shows IE running, but there is no window showing for it. If I then start IE
separately, the Windows Update window pops up also. This is new. It never
happened before.

I resolved the problem. It was caused by a third program, spybot.

In passing, let me note that when I clicked on the link in the email message
I got about a response, it went to a web site, but the screen was blank.
