Over almost a decade of using both free and paid versions of security
software, I find that the free ones, if they are good, work much
better overall than the paid versions in that compatibility issues
without the extra features are much less. The free ones seem to work
better as just an antivirus software and also seem to be more tolerant
to other free (or paid) firewalls and email security. The only
drawback is the limited update service. Bitdefender is a good
example. Their free version is extremely good to find and rid viruses
and so is their paid version in that respect but it is so tempermental
on compatibility that I had to chuck it with a standard XP pro OS
(sp3). Their tech supports don't have versed people to deal with
compatibiltiy issues much. It seems that it had fits with any other
security software present whether you get the all-in-one sutie or
single antivirus. Sounds fishy to me. Also a few years back after a
bad experience with a paid version Kaspersky taking over the registry
and locking it down in spite of me owning the permissions, I switched
to PC Shield only to have them the next year bought up by the same
people who put out Kaspersky and turn their Shield 2008 & 2009 into
the same bad memory hog. Kaspersky and Shield Deluxe are now one and
the same with different names.
