unsucessful start after windows update

after downloading windows update service pack 3, it will not start up, gets
the screen that says windows could not start successfully, no error code
given. i have to go to safe mode and system restore to before update was
downloaded. i downloaded and scanned with windows malicious software
remover,and live onecare, both say no threats found. what now. i have
windows xp

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
