kb937287 SP1 and IE8

A while back I encountered problems installing the kb937287 prerequisite
update. Cruising the forums scared me off the SP1 anyway so I contacted my
computer manufacturer (Acer) and they suggested I avoid this update for
reasons of compatibility...!
So now I come to IE8 and find I need the SP1 after all. Still can't install
old 937287 and windows update doesn't show the SP1 in the hidden updates.
Found the standalone SP1 but it is a huge file and not recommended for single
machines.
Any guidance?
