Dead USB's on docking station after updates
Did a Microsoft Update to a Dell laptop on a Dell docking station. After
update, have no USB mouse, nor USB keyboard operating through the docking
station. After reboot, still no USB mouse and keyboard, no lights on mouse
and keyboard either. Unplugged mouse and keyboard, replugged back into
docking station, no lights on devices, nothing. Shut down laptop, unplugged
from docking station, put laptop back on docking station, will not recognize
USB devices through docking station. Plugged USB mouse and keyboard directly
into laptop, both function properly. Deleted the docking station hardware
profile on the laptop, nothing. Changed docking station, nothing. Need
advice soon.
Thank You

[It took over 3 days for your post to appear here.]

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup.

What updates did you install? Were any of them driver updates and if so,
did you try rolling back the driver(s)?

Re: Dead USB's on docking station after updates
This **IS** a serious problem, Microsoft. We've now seen, over the past 3
workdays, where Vista machine with SP1 have had the most recent updates, and
the blinkin' USB ports (mostly on docking stations, but also internal) are
DEAD. A fix is really needed TODAY, please !

Re: Dead USB's on docking station after updates
There will be no fix unless you call 1-866-pcsafety.

I have 4 vistas all working fine here. I'm not seeing this widespread.

A fix will not be had today unless you call support. We cannot debug an
issue in an email newsgroup when there's no patch that we can see
causing this, nor do we have access to your machine.

Please understand I realize this an issue, but it cannot be fixed in a
newsgroup.

Re: Dead USB's on docking station after updates
MS is not monitoring this thread. See Susan's reply...but you'll need to
know what update(s) may have caused the problem. Note that free support is
only offered for security updates.

Re: Dead USB's on docking station after updates
Soooo.....An automated update for Vista corrupts one or more drivers, on
multiples of our critical workstations, & this is the best response available
? Very disappointing that you're insisting I pay for a support call to get
something resolved that we're not the only one complaining about. Just HOW
MANY users have to complain before you consider it worthy of a better
response ? 100 ? 1000 ? 5000 ?

Very disappointing.....little wonder that Microsoft frequently is the target
of angst.

No one's saying a Vista update corrupted anything.

Re: Dead USB's on docking station after updates
Excuse me....but I am saying exactly that. Four out of four of us in our IT
Office have experienced various USB-connected failures IMMEDIATELY after
Vista updates were installed, over the past 2 days. *Not* a coincidence. I
object to Microsoft sending out updates that appear to cause problems, then
insist on charging for their repairs.

None of *us* is saying it.

Repost:

I'm sorry y'all are having problems but this is NOT happening to most Vista
machines.

Experienced IT Department members do NOT install third-party driver or
software updates offered by Windows Update.

MS is NOT monitoring this thread or this newsgroup. We're all volunteers.

Support for Windows Update:

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

RE: Dead USB's on docking station after updates
Just installed XP SP3 from Dell CD on Dell Precision M90. Installed all
drivers and ran complete MS update. Once I docked it to a port replicator, I
have the same issue of the USB ports on Port Replicator not being recognized
by Laptop. I'll be starting to troubleshoot this issue this afternoon, but
after doing a quick search on the web...no solutions thus far nor cause. I
would hate to have to reimage or reinstall XP to resolve issue, but that may
be the case if it takes longer that 3 hours to troubleshoot...

First time seeing this issue from a fresh install of Dell Laptop, but also
the first few times of using the XP SP3 CD from Dell as well.

Will let you guys know if I find anything during allotted time for
troubleshoot.
