Slow XP startup

Hi,
per the subject my XPpro SP3 is horrendously slow to start-up.
It seems that every time I launch it, Windows Automatic Updates runs,
this takes forever, maybe it's cataloguing all the software on my
computer to see if any of it has a pending update. even if I've set it
only to check for updates and tell me. The only time it seems to boot
respectably is when AU is turned off.
Is that what is happening, if so why, does AU not know what updates are
new? And all the software is registered is it not, so its a one stop
look up to see if there is a relevant update!
A totally different issue, since upgrading? to SP3 the tick notification
on desktop arrange items by: NAME/TYPE/SIZE/MODIFIED has gone AWOL.
where is it?

Does uninstalling SP3 fix the issue?
