Office installation fails with Error 1321
I've been trying to install the following update:

Update for Access 2002 (KB904018)

I was getting the following error:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MsiInstaller
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11321
Date: 12/27/2008
Time: 12:19:42 PM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: JOHN1252
Description:
Product: Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage -- Error 1321.
Setup cannot modify the file C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office10\MSAEXP30.DLL. Verify that the file exists in your system and
that you have sufficient permissions to update it.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Data:
0000: 7b 39 30 32 38 30 34 30 {9028040
0008: 39 2d 36 30 30 30 2d 31 9-6000-1
0010: 31 44 33 2d 38 43 46 45 1D3-8CFE
0018: 2d 30 30 35 30 30 34 38 -0050048
0020: 33 38 33 43 39 7d 383C9}

This is not the first Office update to fail. It seems to hinge on
permissions either with the file or with the installer. In this case I
renamed the file and reran the update. This time it succeeded. When I
compared the permissions on the original file and the one installed by the
Update, the permissions are IDENTICAL.

So my question is what else could be wrong with the capabilities of the
installer or the files that would prevent the update from succeeding? I
really need to know this because it's likely further updates will be coming
and I'd like to avoid these issues in the future.

[Crossposted to Office Update newsgroup]

Give this a whirl:

1. Open IE to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...4-b1240b5135f5

2. Click on the Validate button.

3. On the resulting page, scroll down to the very bottom and click the
Download button for officexp-KB904018-FullFile-ENU.exe.

NB: SAVE the file to your desktop, do not RUN it!

4. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with a button on the taskbar)
then double-click on the saved download to install.

Tip: Insert your Office (or Access) XP/2002 CD into the appropriate drive
bay *before* attempting to install the update.
