Can't get updates!

I have windows xp x86-64 professional, when I visit update.microsoft.com
(using 32bit IE), I click "Scan for updates" and then I get this error:

Windows Update Error

Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page.

Select from any of the following pages for information about Windows Update
services, or send us your feedback.

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3) when posting to
this newsgroup.

Is this a sudden, new problem?

Is Automatic Updates enabled & working?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Could be a variety of reasons - see if any of these are related. If not, is
there any error codes or anything else that may give a clue as to why you
cannot display the requested page?

You receive a "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display
the requested page" error message when you try to install an update
