turning off the computer

When I want to shut down the computer by going to start then to turn off the
computer, the computer will act like it is going to shut down but when it
gets to the window that reads windows is shutting down, it just stays there
and then I have to shut the computer down by the on / off button on the
tower. Help!

- What does this have to do with Windows Updates?
- Service Pack level of system in question?
- Is this a new phenomenon or something it has been doing for some time?
- If new - what changed between it working and not working?
- What normal maintenance tasks do you perform?
