Cannot update windows
The following error comes up everytime I try to update my windows, and it
will not automatically update either. How can I fix this problem?

[Error number: 0x800704DD]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

Hello Veeroxxx,

It helps those answering your questions if you pяovide your operating system
and service pack information (e.g. Windows XP SP2, Vista SP1) and your
browser with version number (e.g. IE7) .

Ditto with the browser

See if the information in this MS Knowledge Base! article,
"Error messages that you may receive when you try to download and install
updates from the Windows Update Web site, from the Microsoft Update Web
site, or from a WSUS server: "0x800704DD," "0x80240020," or both"

It's Windows XP but I don't know what the browser with version number is. I
bought my laptop off of someone else and it wasa already installed.

I am having the exact same problem. I have Windows XP service pack 2 and
this thing is not updating itself at all. I have tried everything I know to
do except messing with the registry which I am afraid to do. I am not a
techie I have tried to download some things from the download center but I
need the secutity stuff and I need them manually. I have my computer set to
auto update but it gives me this Error number: 0x800704DD and says " this
website has encountered a problem and cannot dispay the page you are trying
to view." I am so FRUSTRATED. Can you or somebody with tech knowledge
help me?

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

Reboot.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net stop wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\wups2.dll
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net start wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
.... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:

Close all Internet Explorer windows and other applications.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
--> Click OK.

(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...

Reboot.

Download/Install the latest Windows Installer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/d...displaylang=en

Reboot.

Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer and
visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM scan...
(Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.)

Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.

Reboot again.

If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a
time.

The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend
against the "Windows Search" one. I would completely avoid the Optional
Hardware updates.

Come back - let us know if that worked.
.... Really - come back and let everyone know if that worked.

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate any error

Can you do the following:

Start button --> RUN -- type in:
winver
--> Click OK.

Replicate the line in the window starting with the word "Version" verbatim
here:

I can't complete the line because de windows of winver has not the proper
size.


But searching an a help on winver I opened the 'Help and support Center'
windows and I browsed some sections. In one section I saw the windows update
utility. I run it and the system it is been updated. In any case, it would be
more interesting update the Win Xp through Internet Explorer.
